This is my retro build.
Colt M-16 complete upper with surplus buttstock, and pistol grip. The lower is Armalite with all Bushmaster AR-15 internal parts. I got the complete upper when they were still relatively inexpensive and easy to find.
When I took this picture I was shooting it at 200 yards.

It's difficult to come in after the real deal above but here's a Colt SP-1 from 1974 with a serial number just a whiff above 28,000.

Ok Numrich had some early (pre butt storage) furniture ,butt, grip & triangle handguard as a "cyber monday" special around $23. I bit, and now have somthing laying about to remind me I need to build one.
Thinking Nodak Spud lower. The furniture is a bit rough about like post #45, so perhaps a blem to save a few $ and have a "been there" look. Which incarnations of the M-16 would be correct for the pre butt storage stock and prong type flash hider? Is there still a source for parts kits and or barrels? This looks to be a fun and fairly simple project. Is the barrel indexing/headspace a bear?

The 2nd type of three prong was used untill 1967 on the late AR15s(602), M16s, XM16E1s, and the early M16A1s. The Type E trapdoor stock was introduced in 1971. Putting the barrels on is fairly easy. All you need is a torque wrench with an M16
barrel wrench on it and a vice block for the receiver to hold it down while you torque. The worst you can do is wreck a barrel nut and they are easy to replace(ask me how I know).
