M1903A4 Remington 1943

[/IMG]I have a M1903a4 Remington in fine condition with the original M84 scope and mount attached. The Scope is missing the top elevation knob cover. The only problem I have with this piece is the "C" stock was cut off just forward of the barrel band retainer. I was told this was a standard proctice to cut off the forward end of the stock to create a smaller profile of the barrel end of the rifle and to eliminate the front band and bayonet lug. Have any of you heard or seen this type of field modification?

The M84 Scope would not have been original to the rifle. It's original issue scope would have been the Weaver M73B1.

It was not standard military practice to alter the wood of the 03-A4, but in all likelihood done to "sporterize" the rifle after it left the military.

to add ,,not likely a field modification,, likely a garage job, so that it could be a deer rifle, easy to bring that rifle back.

The handguard & front band should be easy to find. An original NOS Keystone stock, or a used USGI stock may be found, but it could take a few years of searching. Restoring it would be worth your while.

If the stock is original, I would find a junker stock and splice the front part under the rear band. Not hard to do.
