Hi, Bob. Can you post a picture of the bolt (or PM me for email address)?
I have a M1917 Winchester bolt in the Twin Cities, and might be able to help.

Thanks for your help. It is positively a 1917 bolt. My dad has shot it several times. You would think there is one Winchester out there with a Remington bolt.

Yes, there are but here's the deal, what you have is not uncommon or incorrect for that matter. I have a Remington with a Winchester bolt and it shoots nearly MOA with open sights. If traded out and then I have a matching Remington bolt and whose to say that accuracy and headspace won't suffer just for the sake of having that R on the bolt. The design of the M1917 is supposed to be parts interchangeable and that is what makes it interesting. Then there's the issue of parkerized bolts and blued bolts, too many variables are involved.

I think the most common occurence is to fin an M1917 that saw some degree of maintenance after 1919 and therefore non-factory new mixes of parts and finishes are basically the Norm. Much like the M1
garand - vitually all of those have been turned into Heinz 57's.

I'd be happy to help you out: I've got a Winchester bolt in an Eddy M1917 in the Twin Cities, and would be happy to swap, if a test-fit works (I've got the gauge that tells that).
