Little square is steel but there is a small square stab on top of the steel that appears to be brass. Thanks for rod info. Suggestions for parts.

I have two Type 99's with Matching numbers (No Mum) though one is missing the cleaning rod and the AA sights and both are missing the monopod, one T99 has a bent wing for the Airplane sights (unknown whether battle damaged or dropped, though I did come across some blood when cleaning the innards of the bolt/trigger assembley (again unknown whether was there for 60+ years or from previous owner), I'm willing to part with one T99 if you're interested, though you'd have to wait for pics... I'm in Japanicon right now until Jan 2013

Yep... E- Bay and Gunbroker have parts. I would also shop around gunshows and keep my eyes peeled on the "parts boxes". Or broken up rifles that are already been "stripped" for some parts.
I am a sucker for "fixer uppers".... so it would make no difference buying and adding the needed parts. Although everyone has a point about buying complete... parting a rifle together is pricey.
I try and stick with "mild" defacing of Mums... or intact ones. I have noticed that a ground Mum really brings down the value. In my neck of the woods, people really pay attention to that. That being said, I was always told that a Mum that was defaced or ground subtracts 20% of the value....
However, I suspect that if you need a gun to fit your hole.... a ground Mum rifle would do the trick, especially as interest in the Pacific skyrockets...

could probably scrounge up close to 100,000 Arisakaicon's just need to take a nice swim in Tokyo bay, though condition wouldn't be great and probably wouldn't fire.

@Midmichigun; I think it depends on the seller though too, I bought my T38 Carbine for under $250 with the Mum, 3 years ago, I asked the seller if he was serious on the price and he said yes, snagged it before someone else could.

  8. Thank You to USMCKempeitai For This Useful Post:

    Stjohns,
I did see parts at Liberty Tree Collectors... for Type 99's.
    https://www.libertytreecollectors.co...?idCategory=83
There was another site that I have never dealt with that offered parts, but I can't remember the address. Hope the above helps!
