    Sykes fairburn dagger Discussion

I was really looking forward to the "other" sykes fairburn dagger thread and then disappointed when I clicked on it and found it closed.

I wouldn't mind getting one of these but it looks like the market is completely flooded with reproductions that include in many instances the appropriate markings. So it looks like something to pretty much stay away from or simply buy a repro knowing it's a repro and not paying the extra price to get a repro.

    Any thoughts?

How do you tell the real one from a fake, I guess complicating the entire matter is the original manufacturer is making them again.

Get yourself Ron Flook's "Britishicon And Commonwealth Military Knives" and Robert A. Buerlein's "Allied Military Fighting Knives". They are very good books that explain the differences in the knives.

Flook's book is absolutely essential but is out of print and can be hard to find. This website has excellent information:

Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife First Pattern

This takes you to the 1st Pattern information, links to information on the 2nd and 3rd Patterns and various scabbards, markings and post-War production knives (not all are "fakes") are at the bottom of each page.

The Faibairn-Sykes fighting knives can be considered costly but are surprisingly common.

I see them pretty often but I can't tell if they are real or not so basically don't give them much thought.

Nice site, thanks, much to learn.
