If it has no mum, it isn't worth $200, that's the problem. As a last ditch, $400 is pushing it in excellent condition with mum and matching bolt. I don't blame him for taking great care on this one. Even I got carried away with the uniqueness of the object in question but thinking things over I just don't know.

Even at my gun auction from hell you can get a pretty nice Type 99 for $400. Mum, dust cover, monopod, clean, and bayonet in one instance.

Personally, I would shell out the $400 for that rifle in a heartbeat.

Decent Arisakas of any stripe are rare in Canada. Most of them have the mums ground and grungy bores as well as beat up stocks. Bayonets are even harder to come by up here, especially with frogs and in decent shape.

I recently picked up a lovely, clean Thai conversion, from the little information I can find at a gunshow this spring that was converted to 30-06. Surprisingly, it came with a bayonet that is complete with scabbard and bayonet in matching condition.

Another surprise was an intact mum and a sheet metal front sight protector. The rifle was obviously refinished as the bbl is shortened and the front sight protector is a sheet metal stamping that resembles a Garand sight protector.

It still has the 7.7 bore that measures out to .312.

I loaded up some LC brass with .312 diameter bullets and it shot under 3 inches at 100 yards.

Also just picked up a nice Type One, built in Itally for the Japanese. No marks on it whatsoever, other than the serial number. Sadly, it's lacking a bolt. It has the muzzle diameter and bayo lug of the Type 38/99 and the same magazine well as the Arisaka as well.

I have a spare Carcano bolt to install but the extractor cut is in the wrong place. The Type One has the extractor dead center, not off to the left side like the Italian versions.

I agree with those who advocate buying it and leaving it wrapped. I have a last ditch Arisaka and it's the crudest example of a firearm that I've ever seen. The rear sight is a crude peep that's welded to the rear of the barrel and the front sight is adjustable for windage. The butt plate is a flat piece of wood that's tacked to the stock and the barrel is covered in machine marks. The mum while still legible has been disfigured. Judging by the wood it never was issued due to the lack of dents or other blemishes. The serial number is 39369. I bought it at a gun shop for $40.00 on my C&R about ten years ago. The rifle fires just fine because I tried it out after I got it home.
