I can't explain it, I've just never seen them go for much. They are fairly common at the shows and flea markets. Some guys price them around $400 but they don't seem to sell them.

I picked up my Type 99 in February for $90

I believe your persistance and a trained eye are not hurting keeping prices in the reasonable range.

$90 is exceedingly cheap for any shootable non-sportered 99. You were simply very lucky, that's all. The 38's are usually rougher than many 99's and typically seem to sell cheaper unless in exceptional condition in my experience. I think you have also surmised that if you rifle had an intact mum and the monopod and dust cover and sling were not preproductions, you would have paid rather more for it.

Original slings are typically in the $150-200 range. Same for monopods. Real dust covers are around $50 or more. Real cleaning rods about the same. An intact mum would add $50-100 to the price. So figure maybe $600 more? Add the fact your rifle was likely worth more like $200 as you found it, despite the great price you got, and you get the idea.

I know they don't go for much around here either. Last year or so I bought two complete shooters, mums ground, no slings, no cleaning rods one matching one not for $100.00. Both were rough but shooters none the less.

Most expensive one I saw actually sell was $400. That was a very good condition struck mum matching with dustcover, cleaning rod, monopod, aircraft sights, sling and bayonet in bamboo scabbard.

Only issue was the mum. It was intact, not ground at all but struck through the middle with a line. That sold at the same auction I purchased mine at only two months earlier.
