    Question Makarov Hammer Problem

Had my Makarov out for a few rounds at the practice range a couple weeks ago, and it worked fine. Today, I had it out, and the hammer would not lock back (cock) after the slide racked forward. Also could not manually lock the hammer back. With the slide locked in the full rearward position, the hammer is in the cocked position, and stays there, but as soon as the slide racks forward, the hammer also releases and snaps into the fired position.

    Thoughts?

Does it fire double action? It sounds like the sear spring and sear relationship are compromised. Did you strip and clean it since last shooting? Worth a look at the sear and spring I'd say.

defective sear, broken or out of place sear spring or worn/clogged sear engagement notch on the hammer would would be my guess.

Is there any possibility the safety is in the 'on' position, which would automatically drop the hammer to the safe/fired position?

Hmmm... you may be on to something there, barbarossa, as the safety refuses to move into the down (fire) position. The safety lever will not move, whether there is a magazine in place or not, whether I hold the hammer back in the cocked position or not, or whether the slide is fully forward or fully back.
