1917 Bolts with extra hole added

I have seen a few 1917 Enfield bolts (all Remingtons) with a very small hole drilled just behind the extractor groove at bolt front. The hole was at a 90 degree angle to the locking lugs and had a small set screw installed. Does anyone know what the purpose for this addition hole might have been?

In addition to the two standard "in line" gas relief ports found on, I believe, all M1917 bolts one of my Eddystone bolts has a small hole immediately adjacent to the locking lug. It also has a small set screw. If this is an additional gas relief port should the screw be removed? If so, what is the purpose of the screw?

    Thanks

Here is one example. Does this have a purpose or is it lame gunsmithing?

like i said, the extra hole is to help gas excape, common with later and replacement bolts.

Unfortunately I currently do not have access to a digital camera. I will post a picture as soon as I can. The only additional information I can give at this time is that the screw is very small and will probably require a jewlers screwdriver to remove.
