Original serial numbers are fine as long as they're legible and not in a foreign alphabet or numbering system that's not recognized in the USA. I had an early Arlington Ordnance imported M1icon Rifle, (1944 Springfield), that was totally untouched and original sans the stock a few years ago. It was honest as can be and gauged out perfect in the bore. Luckily, it was the smaller pre-Blue Sky import mark and it really didn't detract from the rifle. I found a correct marked original buttstock for it that matched perfectly and it was right as rain. I sold it easily for $1200 to a young fellow at Knob Creek and he was happy as a pig in s--t. It was his first M1 Rifle and I doubt he could have improved on it for the money regardless of the import mark. It shot well too.
