    S & W 1917 .455 cal Pistol

Hello everyone. I have a Smith & Wesson 1917, .455 cal Pistol. S/N68641 followed by a "Crown" 30. It has a 5 1/2" Barrel. Local Gun shop owner's have told me it is in "Pristine" Condition. Can anyone tell me when it was made and what type it is? Thank You, RICKGEE

Does the barrel on your S&W revolver have the following:

SMITH & WESSON .455 with some proof marks like BNP 6 TONS PER (box) ?

RCS.......The markings on the Barrel are as follows: Smith & Wesson .455. I see no other marks on the Barrel? I have been trying to upload some pictures. Will try again right now. RICKGEE

I don't believe it is going to be a Model 1917. The Model 1917 was in .45ACP. Sounds more like a 2nd Model .455 Hand Ejector.

The Model 1917 will have the model number on the butt, whether Colt or S&W.

It's a .455 Hand Ejector (Second Contract). The crown over 30, high serial number and lack of Britishicon proofs means it likely went to Canadaicon for WWI.

The pics are somewhat inconclusive but I think it's been re-blued. The grips are well used and the gun doesn't match. It would take some better pics to tell for sure. It also makes sence, as the gun would have been used and there's almost no wear...just a though. Need better pics.

    Regards, Jim
