Hi folks,

See the attached pictures of the Remington-Lee 1884 of a dear collector friend. He was wondering what the plate on the buttstock could mean - any suggestions?

Sorry for the quality, these were shots from my mobile. Nevertheless picture "6.jpg" (the last one) clearly shows the plate

I don't recall that plate in GeneM's book, but it's been a while.

BTW, the usual breakdown of Remington Lee models are: 1879, 1882, 1885, and 1899.

The main difference between the '82 and '85 being the removable bolt head on the '85, which was done to prevent firing pin "blow outs" to the rear.

Sorry, missed the right designation as I wrote it from my memory. It's a Model 1885, being produced in April 1893. Well, I also thought upon the unit or the ship it could have been used on, but what would this one be?

I believe the ship assignments are in the book. A couple of cruisers, IIRC. USS Atlanta being one(?)
