it was made to replace the m1911a1 PISTOL because with special troops(radio operators, tankers, mortar teams, and so on) who could not carry a full size rifle but would have to carry nothing but a m1911a1 that would not be very smart so the m1 carbine was designed but the miilitary dropped the idea when ww2 was going on and issued them as one of the standerd issue rifles each do have there places when the idea was dropped and like I said they made a great choice.

Ummm, OK, then. A fine line, but it's there. Not "replacement", but "supplement"? How's that?

Regardless, the PDW description is apt. It's success on the front lines beyond expectations was the intent of the post.

UPDATE: I just wasn't happy with the handling of the AR15 with a hammerhead. I tried some deployment and snap shooting with both the carbine and the AR with hammerhead. The M1 carbine was MUCH handier and more ergonomic. I was able to remove the M1 Carbineicon from the vehicle, chamber a round, and fire an aimed shot almost twice as fast as the AR.

I actually traded the AR carbine for the Standard Products non-import mix-master I got. With what I have into the AR build, I came out ahead on the SP trade. I have another 20" barreled retro AR that I like a lot more that the AR carbine. So it is the Standard Products that is "in harms way" again.

My 2 cents... get a Ruger Mini 14. Handles like a carbine, shoots 5.56, and it's made of nice safe wood instead of that dangerous plastic...
