Existence of Cheekpiece for Scoped P14

Have a Winchester P14 which has the original detachable scope mounts fitted.

Had searched for ages for the types of scope rings used until I recently discovered Accumounts making replica mounts and rings including 1" rings. I wasn't aware the old tubes were smaller.

Anyhoo, curious as to what the old snipers used for a cheek piece. There are no holes in the buttstock to suggest that a wooden one was fitted. Suggestions are that they were made of leather.

Anyone seen one or pictures?

I once picked up the information that the No. 3 (T) rifles originally did not have an additional higher cheekpiece, while the rifles which were also used for WWII did. Also, if you take a look at the No. 3 (T)'s in the Knowledge library all three of them do not have a higher cheekpiece. Therefore if I was in your position, I would not try to add it.

But anyway, Would love to see pictures of your rifle. Is there a chance to get any?

I suspect you wouldn't like what you saw. The rifle has been a knockabout rifle for the past 60 years on a sheep station. It was purchased with a new barrel, made by SPORTCO, I have removed the scope mounts with the intent of getting scope rings manufactured for it. Currently use the battle peep as the rear sight. The rest of the rifle is original though I suspect some of the woodwork dings didn't come from any battlefield.

Doesn't matter, I guess it's even greater to see what you are able to do out of a abused rifle . Please also take a picture of the rear sight, would be interesting to see if it still has the F-sight on it!

Sounds like someone might have brought it home from the wars. If I'm understanding correctly, you have or had, the bases on the rifle? Did they look like these: BRITISH ENFIELD P14 SNIPER RINGS and MOUNTS | eBay

Those don't turn up often, hardly ever in fact. Repros have been made, but the ones on eBay are not accurate - good starting point though.

Sounds like a historic rifle. Would be worth finding out who it belonged to and how and where they got it, if possible.

No cheekpiece was used on many of those rifles. Some that saw WWII service had some fitted. Basically the No.4 Mk.I (T) cheekpiece. Which was originally for the No.3 rifle anyway!
