L42A1 CES - Covers, short rifle, snipers

I was lucky enough to pick up (very reasonably) recently an example of the Cover, short rifle, snipers that puts me one step closer to completing the CES for my L42.

Most of us know that a lengthened version of the No4(T) cover was issued for the rifle, but the 1971 User Handbook and 1976 copy of pamphlet No4 - Sniping shows this one.

The style of webbing and buckles/strap ends look very american and it was sold as a Springfield rifle cover.

    Any thoughts........

I too picked up one last year from eBay, advertised as a used gun slip suitable for an air rifle and finished at a very good price!

Looks identical to your cover, but mine is stamped as follows about half way down and is a darker green - looks new, old stock:

    MECo 1973 (with broad arrow)
    B1/1005-99-961-9515

I'll try to post pictures after work tomorrow.

    Kind regards
    Mike

I would be very interested in seeing the pictures.
The 1973 edition of the CES for the L42 lists your part number as being correct for the cover, short rifle, snipers.

There was a 1997 issue of the CES that lists it as B1/1005-99-961-4068

I hope mine is the 'real deal' - please see attached pictures. Certainly looks the same design as your cover.

    Kind regards

P.S Judging by current prices for L42 items on eBay, perhaps we should sell them and retire to the sun!

Thread 5 and the extended 'normal' rifle cover are the only two sorts that I ever encountered in my very limited service and experience with these rifles I have to say

The style certainly looks the same as miine, Mike although yours looks that deep '58 patt webbing green and mine is more Khaki canvas.
The metal fittings on yours are 'British' in their style and mine 'American'

No arguing with the number stamped on yours - same as the one in the CES

I think we can take them as 'correct' when you compare them to the scans taken from the user handbook and pamphlet No4.

    Waco16,

I to have a cover with my L42 exactly the same as yours with the American metal tip to the fastening strap for the hood. It's marked ME Co 1941. I never really questioned whether it was the appropriate item as its identical to that illustrated in the user handbook as well as the 1976 pamphlet. Confused.com???
    Regards
    Steve

    Hi Steve
I would be interested to see some photos of your cover and the markings, to see how they compare with mine.

The way I see it is that if its shown in two official publications from the period then it has to be correct doesn't it?
