A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... One thing struck me about the rifle. The seller said they were imported in 2006. Yet, isn't the barrel dated 07?
Someone help me on this, my 99 dated rifle had a non-flutted barrel originally. It was changed to a flutted one in 2010. When was the transition? Just curious.
    Thank you,
    Michael

The next question that I cannot find a legitimate answer for is 'what is the earthly reason for a fluted barrel? Except the negligeable one of weight of course, is there another?

Flutes were installed for additional cooling, I have read, on other rifles. Could this be the reason?

More exposed metal surface for cooling. Understandable on a gas gun like an AR match rifle that's susceptible to rapid fire strings but not on a sniper rifle IMHO.

Like BRian says.......... Cooling ain't a big problem for sniper rifles. A greater cooling area can be a negative sometimes, requiring a thermal sleeve

Re the S+B telescope BRian. Well....., you came home with a new SUSAT!

I wasn't just referring to the scope. I liked the whole rifle AND scope!! Kidding aside, that was a very privileged day Sir. Meeting the Armourers was a delightful bonus.

The SUSAT is on a light weight AR carbine I have here with an M4 upper and a custom base made for me by Gordon Lamont in Scotland. Works like a charm. The only one around these parts!!
