    M2 stock ?

    I came across a really nice Walnut M2 stock this weekend, it was marked in the sling well with a W and a ordance bomb. My question is when Inland and Winchester started producing M2's out of the factory did they make and mark their own stocks or were they all provided by outside sources like SA ect.

    There has been much discussion of the stock you just described. Most likely the "W" you saw is actually a "M' for Marlin. Despite what some books said, Winchester never used a pot belly stock for their M-2 carbine production. They used what can best be described as a type IV non pot belly with a long or short barrel channel and a reinforced recoil plate area. Winchester did make their own stocks and handguards BTW.

    Thanks ! That makes sence, I'll bet it was an M for Marlin, that never entered my mind. I was looking for a nice M2 walnut stock that had not been altered, it had a an import marked Inland action in it and the guy was not very flexible on price so I passed. Get this his thinking was I should pay more now for an import since they are no longer permitted to come back to the states. Chris

    Del driver is right on the money.
    Though we have no proof that the M is for Marlin, It's our best guess at this time.
    They are a very nice, stout stock.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Charlie that's excatly what I saw at the show, kind of wish I had grabed it now. It's hard to justify buying the whole Carbine when you only need the stock. Chris { Just currious should the hand guard be marked some way as well ? }

    I wouldn't draw any conclusions on the slightly larger W's origin. I have what is clearly a late WWII Winchester stock. It has the Winchester ordnance stamp and the small Winchester W in the sling bevel. BUT SURPRISE! It also has the larger W in the sling bevel too! If it is a Marlin stock, then why does it have the Winchester W too?
    When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

    I'm hardly an expert, and don't know why your's is marked twice. What Charlie showed us is what I saw on this stock at the show. An upside down M with the ordance bomb and no other marks in the sling well or on the sides of the stock. I guess you can look at it as a W or an upside down M. Can you show us a picture of yours.... Best Chris

    Marlin made for Winchester? War ending and Winchester did not want or have time to retool for new stock???? Just a thought! GK
