Gunbrokers K 98 BCD 4 Sniper Rifle opinon.

I purchased a K 98 German Mauser Sniper Rifle less scope from a guy on Gunbrokers last evening. Im starting to second guess myself on if it was a good buy, According to his description it has the letters BCD 4 ,barrell and receiver are numbered the same, numerous German markings ,If you go to the Gunbrokers web sight you can see it i think iitf still posted. If you have a chance i would like your comments it is item #439232178.

Wow, $1,625.00 for a R.C. K98k with scope mount and rings. Do you know if the scope mount and rings are original or repro? I am not sure about K98k value in the U.S.A. but over here in Europe you can get a R.C. K98k like that with a reproduction scope mount and safety between $650.00 and $900.00 depending on condition.

RC is for Russian capture. Most are a mix of serial numbers and early and late parts.

Approximately three million German soldiers and their weapons were captured by the Soviet Union during World War II. The weapons were dismantled, reconditioned and reassembled. Most of them have the "crossed rifles" mark, it looks the letter X. During this process they mixed up all the parts, that's why they have a mix of serial numbers. The weapons were kept in storage and they gave them to communist forces in conflicts all over the world. They showed up in Korea, Vietnam... etc.
"Matching numbers" are important for the value of your K98k. An original all matching number K98k has a higher value than a mismatched number rifle.

Any of the K98k models shown have a discussion about RC pieces and how to identify them...

Sorry to be a party-pooper, but the finish on the scope mount looks rather too good to be true. Bluing is a form of controlled rusting, and this tends to age even if the piece is never used. This looks to me like very "young" bluing. I may be wrong, but in such cases a hands-on examination is vital - and unfortunately impossible with online auctions.

Please note that the seller does not produce a single item of evidence that the rifle was made up as a sniper by the Russian military, rather than by John Q. Bubba or anybody else at any time up to and including just before the photos were taken.

And one is impressed by the chuzpe of the seller in writing "Barrel bands, bolt and floor plate do not match, which is correct for these rifles..." - as if an all-matching rifle were therefore "incorrect". That is turning the notion of "correctness" - which is arguable anyway - on its head! He should have written "... which is common for these rifles".
