We had an insect repellent when I was working on the railways that attracted the buggers so the unknowing were selected to use it so the rest of us could work in peace, you know the type "Go to stores and get a long wait will you and while your there pick up a packet of wooden welding rods will ya."
Of course you have to have the store person in on it as well.

My favorites in my refinery days was, "go get a pipe stretcher" or "grab me a bucket of steam"... We never grow up do we...

Fwiw, Tiger stripes are "burned" on, not that it matters in this case but that's how it's done.

But we used to fall for them every time. Like being sent to some office somewhere for a big or long weight! Knocxk on the door, speak to the bloke at the desk, mention who sent you and what you wanted. Only to find that you were standing outside for a considerable time....... That was your long wait!

Yep had that on cranes the old sky hook I would say it is to far out of radius for the machine but when that sky hook comes over here (Cloud) we will hook onto that and finish the lift Eh!
Some reactions were quite strange even from engineers which I just loved taking the p*ss out of as they could perform all they wanted but if it aint on the load charts capacity ie to heavy to far stiff cheddar.
Another I used to get was a load would be say 80' up in the air and they would say can you swivel the hook! Go away you pest..........

Similar request / assignments could also feature - henway, hammerfor and greekurn - the retorts being - about 3 pounds, hitting nails with and 40 drachma...

I watched a "fast track" employee (just out of college and puberty) murder the "henway" one this week for ten minutes and still not get it.... the future of our organization? (it obviously aint that bright).

The whole apprenticeship seems to have gone now - I still reflect on my "shake wi ol horny" (roots in mining) and being granted Freeman of Coventry as an indentured apprentice - am heading back this week...may rustle a sheep and go graze it to exercise my medieval city rights

I would think that there are only a handful of businesses with real apprentices as you/we all used to know them L1A1. Maybe the huge Industries but here's an example of what passes for an apprenticeship around here. The business where my wife works has just taken on an 'apprentice' She is a bit part filing clerk, pen pusher, tea maker who will be apprenticed for a year. In our local paper a cycle shop is looking for an 'apprentice' that they want to train up, on the job, for 6 months. I suppose you could just call both a form of work experience.

I forgot to say - and you knew that there'd be a catch......... The government are heavily subsidising apprenticeship schemes at the moment to get the welfare bill and unemployment rate down. Says it all really......... And be careful with them sheep while you're excersising your medieval rights!
