    Interesting 1939 '243' coded 98k.

Found this in a pawn shop today, a 1939 Mauser Borgiswald 98k. Here's the layout..
All matching except for bolt ( get to bolt in a bit ) Stock and upper handguard matched to rifle, but stock appears walnut, and upper handguard appears laminated. I also always associated walnut stocks with pre and early war, so why the late war cupped buttplate with takedown hole? Also, not a single mark on the stock except for what looks like a circle with something in it stamped on the sling keeper slot.
Whoever brought it back scratched their name and what looks like a social security number on the mag plate.
Cleaning rod is the short version, and is odd looking. No slot in the head.
The bolt....The bolt appears to be from a Gew 98, matching to itself, except for the Czechicon made firing pin. Also, the bolt has been blued like a regular 98k bolt would be. I find this to be unusual, as Gew 98 bolts were in the white originally, and if this rifle needed a new bolt, wouldn't there be plenty of bent bolts around. I understand also that whoever brought it home may have just grabbed a bolt that was available. No telling.
Anyway, it's a nice, clean piece. Pics below!

Just a guess, Frenchicon stock. Perhaps French Border Patrol gun?

Well now hold the phone Steve! I may have to stand corrected....I looked up 'Frenchicon 98k' and got some interesting info. The solid head cleaning rod is just like all the French 98k rods I saw, and there is definitely a French five pointed star on the bolt sleeve. And I do believe you are right about the stock. It certainly would explain the strange circle with S(?) cartouche in the sling slot. It would never have occured to me that this was a French 98k. Good call, I believe you're correct.
