Oh great thanks for the reply - the #4 rifle at 44 1/2 would be a perfect fit as the box is 45-inches. I will track one down and try it on for size to see how the center support works on the lower action. A next step will be to find out what to do with such a crate

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. If he's able to get ten of any kind of rifles into that box I'd like to see it. No one here seems to be able to get past the mind set that's it's a rifle crate, which it isn't, never was.

If the arms crate is 55.875 inches long its probably a shipping crate for Pattern 1914 Enfields. I understand a lot of the Model of 1917 Enfield shipping crates were converted to M1903 Springfields by shortening the crates by 5 7/8 inches.
