Ross rifles used by the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1 are marked with numerals indicating the battalion of that force. There was a 31st battalion which was from Alberta Canadaicon. I wouldn't have thought that LEC rifles would not have been issue at that time but anything is possible. Pure musing on my part, no facts to support this idea other than what I know about Ross markings.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Thanks RangeRover. I haven't had much luck with the first two anyway. Have discovered that at McGill University they were issued Ross Mk II's in 1912 in conjunction with their Officer Training Corps but there is very little on the events at Laval.

Amatikuluicon: I had thought about that as well but my second number is a Roman numeral so I don't think it will fit into a Battalion

I honestly didn't think this would be quite as difficult at it's turned out. I just love these old rifles. The hunt goes on!
