Scored a IHC Bargin at Cabela's?

Decided to go to Lake Tahoe to celebrate my Anniversary with KiloBravo. I had never been to a Cabela's because we do not have one in Kalifornia. KB talked me into going there first and then backtracking to Tahoe so we could enjoy our stay uninterrupted.

I was looking for a IHC in particular to finish my Garand collection set as I had just finished my Carbine set. I proceeded to the Library, where the good stuff is, and viewed a couple of Springfield Garands. There was no one to talk to in the Library but I spotted a person in the back office who I asked if they had any IHCs. He said they were about to get one and pointed to a rack where one rested with a trigger lock already in place. It turns out it was his and he was trading it in for a Kimber CC pistol.

The clerk was in the back drawing up the paperwork on which they were offering him $600 for the rifle. I told him I would give him $650 and when the clerk returned we gave him the news. They removed the trigger lock and escorted us to the front door where we proceeded to the parking lot the finish the deal. The seller then returned to Cabela's for his Kimber and KiloBravo and I proceeded to Tahoe to celebrate our Anniversary.

I would appreciate any comments regarding the rifle. In particular what should I do with the refinished 50s Springfield Stock. Should I strip it and bring it back to a traditional USGI RLO finish? It's hard to tell how strong the SA/JLG and CC are under the glossy finish.

Should I swap out the HRA and SA parts for IHC? The barrel is a 8-64 SA with a ME of 1+ and it is going to stay.

Was my purchase price high, low or just right?

    Thanks in advance

I would return the stock to an oil finish as you may find that one slippery at times. I'm not sure I'd mess with the parts though, they were installed by the guys that did it for a living and it was sanctioned that way. I'll bet it's exactly as it was when it was surplussed off. Probably shoots like a hot damn...just like it is. Finish looks good...
    Regards, Jim

Nice one wish I could get one but illegal here agree with BAR I have shot varnished 303's and when yer shootin' in 40+ degrees Celsius the whole lot gets like a slippery eel in a speed shoot, that is when I grab a handful of boondies (rocks) to chuck at the target

You didn't tell us if the barrel is a replacement, or if there are rebuild markings on the receiver. Regardless, it's probably best to leave it as is. It would take a lot of effort (& money) to restore some of the parts, & it would always be a "unfinished restoration attempt". That's because you can't find an original unmolested stock (with spiral router marks) at any price.
