sizing 06 in 308 dies

Can you neck size 30-06 brass using .308 dies? More curious than actually looking to do it, dont have a 30-06.

Yes, it will work just fine, but only once. The only problem will be, on multiple firings the case will at some time need full length treatment, so you do need to purchase a 30-06 FL die.
Die sets are very inexpensive, so if you are going to be loading 30-06. buy the needed die set.

The .308 has a straight-walled body compared to the .30-06. You can size the neck, but you'll never be able to set the shoulder back.

Full-length .30-06 die sets are cheap enough that it's not worth the aggravation to use anything else.

If I need to adjust a powder charge after loading I'll pull the bullet make the powder adjustment and use a 308 die to partial size the neck. As the other posters have pointed out at some point you will have to full length size the case so it will be necessary to have a 30/06 full length sizing die set. You can also use a full length 30/06 sizer die back off your intial adjustment a 1/4 turn that will partially size the body and leave approx .018" of the neck unsized and not touch the shoulder!! [B]While it can be done and is better to buy FL 3006 dies and just get on with life ..as per the advice given: let me add one more thing. Usually (not always) folks that shoot 3006 and 308 on the CSP are doing so in a miltary style semi auto rifle. For these weapons, you got to FL resize and trim barss to min specifications or otherwise risk a slam fire or other drama.

At the cost of great dies these days, its hardly worth not buying a set and enjoyng a LIFETIME of use. Great tools pay you back and 40 years later, that set of 3006 dies is still doing it. Dies then were 11 bucks and the Rock Chucker was 32 bucks. Now the dies are about 33 bucks and the press is around 170 bucks. You will get your moneys worth regardless of todays prices in reloading gear so invest in a good set of dies and enjoy the benefits and remember: its a hobby so time is not a factor nor is speed.

In theory, yes. The shoulder dimension of the '06 is smaller than that of the .308 so the .30-06 may neck size without any other part touching the die. Another questions is that since the '06 neck is longer than that of a .308, the .308 die may not be deep enough.
