Mark I at Auction
Went to a gun auction yesterday--a live auction. They had about 150 guns including a good sized bunch of M1
carbines. I did not examine the 1903 Mark I since I wasn't there for that so I don't know how "correct" it was. It went for $1,600. That seems high.

i am not sure on the price but i go to alot of auctions an if the buyers get wound up tight with excitement they tend to pay way to much for stuff.

If it was all original/correct and in excellent condition, I could see it going for that. Any replacement parts and the buyer got snookered IMHO.

The auction catalog refered to it as "rare". With at least 101,000 made, I wouldn't call them rare. If it had survived in original condition or even in restored condition, then yes. The Mark I in my collection did not survive the sporterization of the 50's and 60's.

I would say "uncommon", rather than "rare". All you have to do is do a search under "1903 Mark I" on Gunbroker and you'll see how "rare" they are. Unless the rifle has the original parts, it is worth no more than any other mixmaster M1903.
