    Springfield M11 questions

I am new to this forum and have to confess that while I admire classic old guns, I am not very good at being a gun guy. But I do know about internet forums, and know there are true experts who are generous and helpful people that participate.
I just acquired a Springfield M11. I used a borrowed one when I was a high school kid 57 years ago hunting rabbits in Wyoming. I loved the rifle and finally discovered what it was and was able to purchase one last week. I am certain it is the NRA sales model--no groves in the and the unique butt plate. My friend, who is a gun guy and CMPicon gold medal marksman, looked at it and told me it was almost unused. Some of the original finish has not worn off the bold from being cocked. It is pristine in all respects. The bore also shows no wear. The person who sold it to me told me he bought the gun in 1976 and ran about 10 rounds through it before putting it in his safe.
My question to the experts has to do with the stock. The metal shows all signs of being nearly new, as does the stock. However the stock is nearly flawless but has varnish finish.
My friend, who is familiar with the M2 military training rifle does not think the NRA version came with a varnished stock, but he is unsure. What are your thoughts? Also what value should I place on it for insurance?
Any help will be appreciated. I don't know how to include photos, but if someone would like to see the rifle before you offer an opinion, I would be happy to e mail them.

    Thank you in advance
