I did see that though. Kind of opposite to the guy about to fire with the hammer down...

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. No sign of the butt marking disk, nor of the cutoff, though slot may be there. Possibly an early Savage MkI as they had the thick top band or at least some did, as shown in TBS p.247. Foresight protector could be the fabricated type shown in the same photo in TBS.

Could also be an early BSA as the MkI forend & cocking piece were seen on a fair number of early non-trials rifles, both trials parts left over and sent to BSA and also some early production by outside contractors IIRC. For example am pretty sure SM made the waisted foresight protectors for a short time as well as the MkI cocking pieces.

Only way to tell for sure would be a closeup of the backsight relief cut: on the (Model B) trials rifles the cut was shallower due to the lack of the backsight plunger, on the Model C trials and all subsequent No.4 production, the relief cut was deeper and cuts through the right wall ahead of the sight axis pin hole.

“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.
