Hmmm... according to John's bolt charts, a J5 on the safety lug indicates 1918.

I thought the early J5 bolt, stamped on the safety lug, was a straight handled bolt. The one in the photo looks swept. ????

Good eye - I'd overlooked that. Sakorick - you sure there is a J5 on the safety lug and not on the top of the bolt handle? Maybe a closeup picture would help.

Looks like a V or N on the bolt handle under side too.

So a J5 mark on the safety lug and a "bent" bolt handle. Correct?

I did take another look at John's chart and there were J5-marked bolts with "bent" handles. Must have overlooked it the first time. It does date to ca. 1918, though.

[SIZE="2"]Yes, it's a J5 bolt with a bent bolt handle and I looked at the chart too. There isn't much else to say. It is what it is and a beauty at that. My 1903 Mark I also has a J5 bolt but it has a straight bolt handle. I believe those J5 bolts came either way.[SIZE]

Like I said, rifles after 1927 often came with "earlier" parts, although, after 70 years following the end of military service, it is hard to say what is "original" and what's not. I've seen rifles with very late receivers and very early "original" barrels - some going back to 1905 or 1907 (the barrels, that is!).

Jim....I have shot it with 150's and 180's shoots great and I can see the thicker front sight. Unfortunately she is on GB right now as I'm reducing my population. The kids don't want my "old" rifles so I'm selling many of them and putting the $$ in my two grandson's college fund. Regards, Rick.
