Awesome picture! Thanks. That's one of the best Carbine pics I have seen, up there with the Marine on Iwo Jima with the flag above him.
BTW: Notice he has two double mag pouches on his belt! The WW2 re-enactor "stitch Nazis" say in WW2, they never wore two double pouches with the carbine. I have seen many pics of guys with 2 doubles, a couple with three doubles, and even a guy with 3 doubles and a stock pouch in Burma.
When I did Civil War re-enacting, the stitch Nazis used to bug me. In the Civil War, NO ONE would have been correct after 6 months in the field. Shoddies fell apart, civilian garb was worn, capture clothing and weapons were used. They try to create a "reality" that never existed....

I vote for him being a staff weenie. Way too clean way too starched and ironed. No web gear, no spoon, no water, I see what looks like a musette bag behind him. That carbine has been banged around a lot look at the butt end, not a lick of oil on that stock either.
What do you think Jim, Rick?

I don't know, Dave. It looks like a first aid kit can in his shirt pocket. A staff weenie wouldn't have that, and probably would not have multiple mag pouches, either. They would get in the way when he was sitting on his butt! His canteen would be on the opposite side (right rear) away from the camera. On Iwo, my dad just had a belt with canteen, a couple frags, and mag pouches for his Carbine. No web gear. He always said the suspenders were for the guys with heavy loads of Garand
clips, bayonets, and E-tools. Italy was pretty dry, and oil would not stay around long enough to sink in. (Just being devil's advocate on this point).

No way this guy is staff or an aide. The helmet shows honest wear as does the carbine. Nothing is bright and shinny on him. He's been around enough that he feels comfortable taking a rest on boulders. Show me an aide or rear echelon troop that can nap on rocks and I'll eat my hat. Look at this face for Pete's Sake....he has been around. You can't make assumptions from clothing. Yes it looks in pretty good shape but there could be a lot of reasons for that. He may have just been issued that uniform as a replacement or perhaps he just got back from R&R. Whatever the real story we will probably never know what it is, but I vote for a real deal G.I. who is tired enough he takes a rest on rocks. Guys from the rear need a cot or blanket on smooth ground.
