Looking to purchase my first Martini Henry

Got to see it tonight. I put a deposit on the rifle. Someone in the past must have tried to bash out the cocking indicator because it does not come out. It looks like a hollow ground punch was used to try to get it out as it has a ring mark on it (see picture). It will probably need careful filing around it's circumference to get it out. If I do a good job I should be able to reuse it.

Well, finally picked up the rifle today. Got the action disassembled, cleaned and reassembled. I was able to remove the cocking indicator. It came out a bit easier than I thought, but as I feared it was mushroomed a bit. The new one goes in and out much easier. Also replaced the striker spring.

Question is about the retaining screw for the cocking indicator. The original was all buggered up so I ordered one of those as well. Problem is that the new one is about 4 times as long as the original and obviously will not go in all the way. Is this the wrong part or are they made extra long and then fitted? The only way I can figure is to remove the trigger assembly, thread in the new screw all the way and then file it flush with the inside of the receiver and then reassemble. What say you?

Yes, that's how I'd do it. At least for a one-off. For multiple examples the method would be to make up a lantern chuck and turn off the excess. But unless you are planning a production run, do it as suggested.
