    M1 with CASM Scope Mount

Ex Danishicon M1icon and a late 40's early 50's Weaver K3 with a CASM mount in between. Range: 100yds.
    Winds: light and variable
Temp and humidity: About 3 degrees above miserable on both counts.
Left target: 1969 LC M2 Ball. Obviously not the most accurate or consistent M2 on the planet. The high flyer was the last shot. Felt and sounded much more powerful than the other 7.
Right target: Old handloads with 150gr Remington CL's and IMR 4064 powder. Two of the rounds in that clip were WCC 54 M2's, didn't notice until I got to the range so only had six to try. A bit of vertical stringing but otherwise seem to have potential.

I think if you load your own and use a proper sandbag, you'll get a firm hold on this badboy...nice looking rig. I'd love to try it out. The rig goes on instead of irons? Uses a set screw to stabilize?

Yep. Remove the rear sight and the mount fits down into the pocket. A machine screw on each side centers it using the bevel cut in the sight ears. Some elevation adjustment is provided via a set screw at the front of the mount where it contacts the receiver ring. Then there's a big set screw at the rear that puts tension on the mount. Give it a try. I think you'll like it.

8 hundred thousand number SA? Is that a lead annealed heel? The scope makes it look about right too, almost. I have a 3 Mil here in .308 I'd love to try that with. Any grief trying to get the en blocks in?

A bit newer than that, but not by much. 1,08xxxx SA. Dec '42 IIRC.

With the CASM mount you have to replace the op rod catch with a modified version that prevents the clip from being ejected with the last round. Just insert an empty clip before installing the mount and load the magazine one round at a time. Go to The Holbrook Device for the M1 Garand, M1 Thumbsaver, John Holbrook to see the modded op rod catch. If you have a spare it would be a simple task to do the mods yourself.

Yeah, modern optics on antique rifles just don't look right IMO. Hope it can stand up to the recoil. Would've liked to put a Lyman Alaskan on it but waited too long to get one. The prices are nuts nowadays due to the popularity of the Vintage Sniper matches. At present they go for $350-$500 at auction. I can remember a time not so long ago when you could hardly give them away. Pretty much the same thing happened with 97 Winchesters when CAS caught on.

    Update

Seeing as how the M2 Ball turned out to be not so hot accuracy wise I've been casting about for a descent hunting load for the M1icon over the past week or so. Haven't ordered any loading components in a while and was surprised at how little was available in the form of bullets. Finally settled on some 150 and 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and Hornady 150gr Spire Point flat base. Decided to stick with IMR powders and chose 3031, 4895 and 4064 to work with.
It showed it's dislike for both weights of Ballistic Tips right off the bat. So much for using that idea.
The 150gr FB Hornady's were a big improvement with the 3031 load being the best.
Thunderstorm sent me packing before I could get past 100yds. I may try some FB 165's and 180's later on but for now I'm happy with the 150gr IMR 3031 load.
BTW, the aiming circles are 3'' diameter. Even thought the scope has fine crosshairs they still cover up anything smaller.

P.S. Yall don't be laughing at my targets now, can't quite see the logic in paying good money for something I'm gonna shoot holes in when cardboard boxes are free and plentiful.

Have not encountered that mount before. But similar in concept to an older, smaller mount that's no longer available:

It's main drama was the occasional loosening of the "slop takeup" set screws, but a wee bit of Loctite sorted that worry. Wouldn't do for a conventional scope set-up, but it's been useful!
