A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Looks more like that bolt was welded firmly in place at one time.

Nope... Just poor craftsmanship. It is as I say above...Below is yet another example, where you can see the spotweld on the receiver. I can show you many more examples of Germanicon KWKG changes to Garands exactly like this, if you prefer...

The stupid spot-welding business can usually be corrected by very, very cautious grinding. What is really annoying is all the No. 4 Enfields with ground-off bayonet lugs - an irreversible operation. On Mausers and US rifles the affected part can be replaced. On No. 4s the affected part is the barrel!

Now, that really IS a shame Patrick. I had not heard about it before.

I wouldn't be able to use a carbine that had things like that done, I wouldn't see it as safe. The left lug being modified...
