Thread: Did the Isrealis modify the rear sight on 7.62mm 98K conversions?

    OOOO-RAH! Fist pump.

I just acquired a really (!) nice Mauser rebuilt to 7.62 NATO caliber by the Israelis. 1940 Sauer & Sons receiver. Interesting markings artfully and subtly applied. Nice trigger. Even, consistent parkerized finish. Lovely golden beechwood stock and handguard with nary a ding or crack. The bore shines like a new Roosevelt dime. Muzzle crown pristine and tight.

Alas, "nothing is perfect, except in the mind of God." Problem is that its missing the rear sight - elevator ramp, spring and slide assembly.

I seem to remember reading (somewhere can't find it) that the Izzy's replaced the rear sight with one calibrated to the 7.62 NATO trajectory when they did the rebuild. Is this correct?

So - do I need to find an Israeli rear sight to bring the rifle back to proper trim? Or is a normal wartime one for 8x57 appropriate?

I'm hot to trot to get some groups on paper! After I get the sights sorted out, I'll take it to the range and post the results.

Also does anyone have a particular .308/7.62x51 ammo that has shot well in their gun?

I thought they just re-barreled, re marked them and carried on. No different sights, front or back.

My Israel K98icon has a bog standard Mauser 98 rear sight but the foresight blade is higher than a standard K98, for ammo I have been running Australianicon 7.62 surplus successfully through mine.

Just looked and mine has a standard rear sight and higher front sight too.

I have a bunch of Israeli Mauser parts here as imported from there years ago. I'll look and see if there are any rear sights present and report back.

    Brian that would be outstanding!

I'd really prefer to keep this rifle in its original character. (Although saying "original character" about a piece whose provenance has already been stepped on more times than a dance floor may be a bit of misnomer.) Anyway its in such nice condition, and hopefully a tack drive to boot, that putting the "correct" rear sight on it may give my soul some Kharma points. Always a needful thing.

When all the dust and smoke have settled I will endeavor to post pics and shooting results.

Drop me an email at mrnatural at ppsh41 dot com. Thanks.

I struck out looking for a rear sight leaf. I have plenty of safety assemblies and a hodge lodge of other Mauser, Lee Enfield and P'14/U.S. M1917 parts from the same load. Try Springfield Sporters in PA. I know they had a load of Mauser parts from Israel.

    Well thanks for looking Brian.

I already tried Springfield Sporters with negative results.

I've got daily searches going on Potatobroker and eVilBay. So far stuff is either overpriced or fugly. Not to worry. Something will turn up.

But if anyone reading this has the parts, please give me a jingle. I'd prefer to keep the money in the milsurps family if I can.

Any German K98icon rear sight would suffice though ideally it should have WaA37 or WaA359 on the side of the base. No big trick to resolder the sight base on as the screw on the top of the sight base at the rear extends into a blind hole in the barrel to center it. Some even epoxy glue the base on which I have heard works as well. I may even have a WaA 359 sight complete, I'll check.

Well the sight base (the part soldered to the barrel) is already there. I just need the elevator (ramp, whatever), spring and leaf with slider. If you have an appropriate set, drop me a line at the email mentioned above and lets make a deal.
