    new enfield No 4 Mk1

Hello, just going to make a quick post about the new Enfield I bought today. I believe it is a Maltby, the serial number part of rough so it isnt easy to read. I have plenty of pictures just short on time now. Hopefully these will be a good start!

Maltby it is and the the serial number should be on the rear face of the bolt handle as well. Compare the two and you should be able to work it out.

Whoever was stamping the numbers plainly didn't give much of a ____.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.

Agreed, although the 'all over the place' application of serials seems to be pretty typical of UKicon wartime production, especially on early Fazakerleys & on Maltbys!

I suppose they were in a hurry........

Hello! Sorry, I didn't notice your posting till now. Yes, I'd agree, the show was quite poorly attended by the general public, but they managed to hold it on the same day as a classic car & motorbike show just over the road at the NEC. It's hardly rocket science but they mess it up with depressing regularity. It was worth my doing the show, but only because I collected monies that were due to me, rather than because sales were so good! Hope you enjoyed yourself.

Nice rifle, congratulations. I had a Maltby recently which had been FTR'd (Factory Thorough Repaired) just after the war. It's wood was similar to yours -- beech on the front end, and walnut on the stock. Just didn't like the 2-tone look. Spent a considerable amount of time restaining the wood with different mixtures on the front (beech) and rear (walnut) to get the wood to be close to a match. But it was worth the effort. (And the stamping on the receiver ring was just as poorly done as yours. Nothing like the careful stamping on the Long Branch Enfields)
