    Need help with stock

Hi, I have a C sock, either for an 03 or an 03A3. It seems to have a rebuild stamped DAL.
Z is stamped in the recess for the magazine cut off. Faint circle P. Just before the rear sling swivel is a stamped 1311 26. Right sight has a deeper cut for the bolt handle. Also appears to be a cut out for a Lyman 48 sight.I have used it on my 03A3. What do I have ?

    - Thanks, Kab

Take a closer look at the "1311 26" - you might have a former National Match stock - is there a number between the 1311 and 26?

Rick, I can't tell. I think there once was a number but it is just an indent now. If I read right DAL could have been an "unknown " inspector from 1919-1930.

If your stock was born a 1903 rifle your 1903a3 rifle barreled action would never fit into this stock without cutting the forend ring groove. You can put a 1903 barreled action in a 1903a3 stock, but not the other way around if you intend to use the upper hand guard wood.

Nothing "unknown" about DAL - he was Daniel A. Leary, who inspected mostly National Match M1903s between roughly 1920 and the mid-1930s. I'm virtually positive the stock is a former National Match rifle stock which was mounted on the rifle with a serial number of 1311X26, which would date it to about 1929-1930.

A 1903 will not fit in an A3 stock without relieving the stock for the rear sight collar.

I have a 1918 Springfield barreled action and it fits perfectly into a Original pinned Smith Corona stock with no modification to the stock.

Not missing any rear sight then. If you own a 1903a3 just pull the upper wood off and look down into the Inletting of the stock and post what you see. There is no Inletting involved by removing a 1903 rifle from the original stock and dropping it into a 1903a3 stock then installing the 1903 handguard. You can't do the same to a 1903a3 into a 1903 stock without cutting it for a handguard ring.

Thanks everyone. Rick thank you for interesting information. I bought the stock ($5) in 1960 for my 03A3 barreled action ($20). Has a 6 groove barrel. Dropped it in, bought the necessary hardware and shot it until I got a nicer looking stock.
Does the stock have any value ?
