Is that a number I see left side, just in front of the receiver, on the barrel?

The number on the barrel, just ahead of the receiver is the rifles actual serial number.

The numbers on the scope and the trigger guard or the ones put there by Gibbs.

I suppose then the original military serial number was "3344"? Would the .280 Ross caliber barrel have been the original barrel, or replaced by George Gibbs?

The barrel is original factory Ross.

I`m sure the folks at the Ross forum would love to see this splendid rifle.

That serial number denotes this rifle having originally been a factory sporter as, the military Rosses only had the serial number marked on there stocks. The 280 caliber would have been the original barrel from the Ross Rifle factory.

Hey Ax.303, I've already told Rob to save all the pictures I did here and post them over at the Ross Rifle forum. I believe I somewhen registered there, but not too sure about it. But you have my permission to use the pictures on the Ross Rifle forum, always glad if I can help with research information. And if it's allowed there, tell them this rifle would be for sale .

Many thanks for letting me know that this was not a military Ross rifle. This rises one question, were they bought factory new by George Gibbs, or would it have been provided to him to turn it into a Sporter?

Edit: funny, note the (filled) cutout in the stock and the holes of this rifle here: Pictures of OX-5's Scotch Deerstalker looks like it had the same origin!
