I was avoiding here, but yes, out here on the west coast it's a common term among the boating community. The signage was still up even a few years ago from the days of the big Chandlers. The ones following the HBC days.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Chandlers, are quite useful shops to remember for a wide range of hardware connected with boats. I'm not a boating person myself but, some years ago, I needed some elasticated cord for a project and discovered that I could obtain exactly the right stuff from a Chandlers because it is used on boats.
