It's always hard to say exactly what's happening in one of these photos. The coloring is out of whack because they WERE colorized after all. As for Capt(then Cpl) Laidlericon shuffling off with his Thompsons...let's not mention the pocket button undone...

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The guy in the tree would be best served if sat on a limb behind the trunk of the tree so not so exposed. I'm sure the way he is perched now, you would see him for quite a distance. Has to be a posed photo

No one would sit up in a tree like that for any reason...no escape route. Trust me on that one.

Aside from the Japaneseicon in PTO that is, no sane person would set up in a tree.

Agreed, then the Boyes anti tank rifles found them good sport. Shoot through the tree trunk. That's still what would happen, even with that guy. A rifle round would go straight through.
