Maltese cross on a Savage rear sight?

I took these pics tonight of a No 4 Mk I* T Long Branch sniper. The rear sight is a Savage, and found on top of it is a Maltese Cross?? Anyone know what that is about? Not my rifle unfortunately...

Unused Savage parts went to LB after the Savage contract expired in the summer of '44. I assume that the rifle is one of the 90Lxxxx series. No reason that the sight isn't correct and original. IIRC the cross is correct.

On various examples, I've seen the rear sight marked with the "Maltese Cross" and on some others not. You should find it underneath up front on the forestock as well.

My 45 LB sniper also has the Savage rear sight, but no maltese cross. The cross does appear at the front of the lower forestock however. I have also seen the cross on the front telescope pad.

I remember discussion about this marking years ago on the Enfield forum. Someone asked why a maltese cross, and someone answered "cause it's for putting round holes in square heads".

Please forgive me if I have not used adequate political correctness in this post.

The maltese cross is a NONE STANDARD part marking. I have a few LB No.4T rear sights so marked. The missing 300 yard iris is the none standard reason.
Finding a S part on a LB or vise versa is not uncommon..... This is the part that usually catched the humpers who build up rifles and just mill off the 300 yard iris.

Ha! Good, makes plenty of sense. I never even noticed that was gone off that rifle, my eyes were too starry...it's a beautiful piece.
