Best Way To Care For Stocks

Just a question for everyone. I have a few milsurp mausers and was wondering what everyone does to care for the stocks. I've heard wax, furniture polish, oil etc. I'd like to keep these rifles looking sharp and keep the stocks protected.



Oh and the mausers are 1) Yugo M48 BO 2) Swede M38 3) Swede M96.

Tose three mausers originally had an oil finish. If it were me, about once a year I'd hand rub a light coat of BLO into them and wipe the furniture down with ballistol between range sessions as part of cleaning.

I'm with Claven 2 on this one, but I just go about it a little different. I clean the guns with Gojo, lanolin hand cleaner, then wipe it down with a damp then dry rag. Then I melt beeswax, boiled linseed oil and turpintine in equal parts ay a low heat (no flame) when this stuff cools to a paste, I rub it in real good, let it dry for about an hour, then buff, wait another day and buff again. It make a real tough finish that is easy to maintain. If you scratch it just re-apply and re-buff. I've been using it for years, HTH-SDH

sdh is correct, that's a common military finish for US and Commonwealth weapons. Mauser, o nthe otehr hand, were usually maintained in the field with a concoction similar ot ballistol. The Germans developped it in WW1 as a multi-purpose disinfectant/lube/rifle preservative. They also sold it to contries that bought Mausers from them. Factory finish was usually Linseed or Flax oil and the ballistol just maintained that finish

Using the BLO/Turp/Wax mix won't hurt it though, so by all means give that a try if you want. If you live in really hot climates though, it can make for a sticky rifle

Thanks guys. So correct me if I'm wrong but the best method is Boiled Linseed Oil rubbed in then sit overnight then do it again, then ballistol? Not too familiar with "ballistol", is it some kind of wax? Sorry for being "uneducated" concerning this product.

Ballistol is an organic biodegradable non-mineral oil. It's really popular with black powder shooters and REALLY huge in Europe where it's used like we use WD-40

I order mine from Thunder Ridge in the states.
