    SA Serial Number 1092388

I have a receiver [sn 1092388] that I purchased with the idea of building up a Sporter ..... it has been drilled already for the Lyman 48.

after doing some light research I see that this was among the last of the SA receivers made prior to Mark I production and that these receivers/rifles are often in the National Match category.

any thoughts here on this receiver's pedigree?

    TIA

    one more thing,

this receiver is in its original config. and has no Hatcher Hole .....

if I do pursue the Sporter project should I drill the Hatcher hole?

It was manufactured on or about 4-20-1919. I wouldn't drill a HH. I wouldn't put a scope on it either. Just my opinion.

You have erred slightly. That's the bad news. Mark I production started in early December, 1918, somewhere around S/N 1035000.

The good news is that you have a National Match receiver. That's why it's drilled for a Lyman 48. It's well-documented that non-Mark I rifles in the upper S/N 108xxxx through lower S/N 109xxxx range are 1919 National Match rifles. And the even-better news is that the 1919 National Match rifles exhibit a fairly wide barrel date range. So, while challenging, the rifle is restorable.

I recommend that you seek another receiver for making a sporter and set that one aside or pass it along as a "project rifle." Good high number receivers suitable for making a sporter are fairly common and inexpensive.

    My 2c worth.
