    Type 38 School Rifle

    Hello good folks,

I am interested in learning a little bit more about this Type 38 rifle. Is there a way to figure out what year the rifle was manufactured? From my research I believe the rifle was taken out of Japanese military service and sent to some type of university or school as a training rifle. Is this correct or is there more to it? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Travis

Yes, this rifle was accepted into the Japanese military and removed when it was deemed too worn to continue active service. It then became a fully functional school rifle.

Your particular example has been reblued at a minimum. School rifles never look that new. Looks like a repro sling, possibly the same with the dust cover as these don't usually survive to school service.

Thank you. Yes I added the sling. The dust cover is numbered to the rifle though.

Serial number of your rifle puts it being built in the 1914 time frame. The double circles in front of your serial number are unique....never seen them marked quite that way. It is original though.

Sorry for the double reply. Not sure how I did that.

School rifles were usually marked with double zeros in front of the serial number. I just assumed they didn't have the proper stamp and marked it with what they had.
