The German helmet has holes in it...so no good for a bucket.

The liner is also a part of the helmet and is not removable. The reason the GI helmet could be used as it was was because the helmet and liner were two separate pieces. No other helmet ever produced was a two part design.

I remember having my hair deliberately short in hot weather so I could wash my head in a helmet full of water...long ago now.

Easy to clean and dress wounds, keep watch for ticks. I still have mine short, mostly because the wife like it that way strangely enough.

Always a No. 2 for me too. Remember when we went to Kevlar helmets and were told to stop using our helmets for wash basins and cooking pots?
I do remember getting mine issued down here at NAVY stores in Esquimalt. By then I was doing reserve battle school and out of the battalion line so I never got that warning... I just didn't do it. wouldn't work any more anyway...
