what type WOOD are CMP stock sets

they look like birch to me, but they take stain like walnut?



The handguards especially have some of the typical birch appearance. At least the got the proprotions down pretty well. not fat at all, including the handguards.

The CMP advertises their stocks as walnut and the very few I have seen were definately walnut. Does the stock have a CMP cartouche. It should if the stock is a CMP commercially ordered replacement.

The CMP sells walnut stocks. Complete rifles have been sold with either birch or walnut stocks. The one in the photo looks birch.

The CMP stock sets that I have seen with the CMP cartouche on the side are made of walnut. The stock sets (that come with Service Grade rifles) that have the CMP cartouche on the bottom of the pistol grip are birch, as far as I can tell.

There was a time that you could order a stock with or without the CMP Cartouche. I don't know if this option is still available or not.

Yea, that's my rifle, I have it up on the Shopper. It is birch, with the CMP on the bottom of the grip. It came on my service grade Winchester that I ordered in December. It's a nice looking stock. anyboby know who make them? Boyds?

I got the same on a CMP winchester. It's a Boyd's birch all slimmed down.

It had some issues
-lower sling loop is real proud of the wood, it appears they bored the screw hole off at an angle away from the comb.
-rear hand guard is really tight and contacts the barrel.
-came with a thick stain on it but I cleaned that up with mineral spirits.

Otherwise it's an attractive birch stock.

anyways, not a problem to me anymore, I have to send the rifle back. I got looking deeper when it wouldn't shoot better than 8-10 inches at a hundred yards off the bench. I discovered my reciever had brazing metal added to the face to make the SA barrel index. I got a fed ex tag to send her in. We'll see if I get a replacement or a refund.
