    Interesting News!

I was over at the CMPicon last week, and heard a VERY interesting tid-bit regarding the Games Matches at the Nationals. The "issue" ammo for the Garandicon and Springfield Matches will NOT be that crummy HXP, but rather new-production Federal!

Maybe I will shoot them again!

John, actually it's Hornady's new "Garandicon" round that will be issued for the games. Here's a link to the CMPicon program that explains it. You have to scroll down about a third of the way. They don't make it easy to find.

The new production part isn't new....the buzz that it's going to be Federal is! Could have been a brain-fart on the part of the source...but it's a good source inside the CMPicon HQ. Could be wrong....but I hope it isn't! While ANYTHING is better than that HXP crap, that it might be Federal is even better still!

How crummy is the HXP? My service grade H & R was spraying HXP 68 all over the place but it seemed fairly accurate in a couple of 03/A3s. Carl

I don't consider HXP crummy, but it is what it is... ball ammo. I have also noticed improved accuracy when shooting thru my 03A3, and my garand... well it does okay. The best HXP I have come across was the 1969 production stuff. The 1977 production that I have been issued at Camp Perry the last few years, was less than satisfactory. With that said, I shoot the heck out of HXP. I am glad CMPicon is going back to new production ammunition, whether Federal or Hornady for the CP games.

For what it is - M2 Ball - HXP is as good as any and better than most accuracy-wise. In my "As Issued" M1icon it shoots on call and doesn't seem to have as many real "WTF?" fliers as LC M2 Ball.

While I've never personally had any trouble with it when it was issued at The Nationals or Western Games, I've seen and heard others with no reason to fib say they have.

It's those problems - misfires, hangfires, hard extraction, too long OAL, too long headspace, and even a few slamfires - that make it unsuitable for match use.

For plinking or practice HXP from CMPicon is (or used to be) one of the best deals out there.

But for match issue to 1500 or so competitors probably not
