WW1 British Sniper Rifles and Accessories by Nigel Greenaway

The following series of three articles are being re-published with the kind permission and consent of MILSURPS.COM member, Nigel. He originally wrote these articles about WW1 British sniper rifles in a UK magazine last year, which were published over a four month period covering February 2008 to April 2008. The publisher, Target Sports magazine, has given him permission to scan the articles and post them independently.

On behalf of MILSURPS.COM members, we'd like to publicly thank him for his support of this forum.

Note: The wrong caption was used in the March issue. The picture on the 2nd page (page 58) bottom left should have read: "Rare experimental or possible Bartle overhead mounts for an Aldis No.4." The caption they used described the P14(T) which should have been used on the bottom right hand picture. They were in the order of the PPCo, Aldis and ended with the Winchester.

    1. In addition to the series of articles posted above, there is a series of four articles that Nigel originally wrote about the No.4(T) sniper rifle in the same UK magazine, published over a four month period covering July 2007 to October 2007.

Interesting that there were 750 Aldis scopes on hand in 1917 unfitted to rifles. This while photos show many in France making do with the miserable PPCo. scope, the questionable Winchester A5 or often no scopes at all!

Apparently the stores wallahs followed peacetime policy that the rifles on issue were "good enough" and that issue having been made, nothing was needed except replacements for losses?

This might explain the relatively pristine Aldis scopes sometimes seen on eBay and elsewhere, which appear to have had little use despite being fitted with Aldis or Purdey mounts. Probably these sat in stores throughout the war and were then stripped and sold off post-war with the rest of them.
