I tried the Woolite and brushed method. This removed lots of grime, leaving the water a sooty black.
After drying... I happen to be using some Fast Orange hand cleaner, when I had a new thought........... Smeared a coat of it on both sides, stuck it in a Zip Lock to soak, brushed and rinsed it a hour later, more grimey dirt washed out, but still the rust stains.
Been thinking about the spray CLR.... but wife says NO.
Thoughts?

Just tried a 50-50 mix of liquid CLR and water. Soaked for a hour in a plastic pail, then pulled and brushed briskly.
Some success as it pulled about 50% of the heavy rust stains out not harming the original color as close as I can tell.
Now hanging C-tip to C-tip drip drying.

as goofy as sounds super sticky non smeary tape works well--wrap adhesive to stain, then fold bend fondle beat on then remove tape and repeat process-won't get all but will remove 70% and you dont get keepers wet, bake them out so you dont rust them

painter tape works ok are some that are stickier and don't leave adhesive on sling

Two standard methods for removing rust from cloth.
1) Old household recipe: soak rust stain in lemon juice. Rub salt onto soaked stain. Leave overnight. Sponge off (do not rub, that may rough up the fibers).
2) Commercial rest removers for clothes (not metal) typically use oxalic acid. But try a drop on an inconspicuous corner first, in case it bleaches the fibers!
3) Where to get oxalic acid? Oxalic acid is the stuff for getting rust stains out of wood (gunstocks!) and is the basic ingredient in some solutions sold for "color freshening" of weathered wood in patios and decking.

I had a bunch of Garand slings with some rust stains & alot of grime on them. I took off all the metal, and made a sudsy batch of laundy detergent & water and soaked them in it overnight. The next day I fired up the powerwasher and layed them flat on a stale walkway. I stepped on one end and blasted away. You wouldn't believe the river of brown crud that flowed out of those slings...Did both sides, hung em up to dry in the sun and they look new...
