M1903 Mark I Stock Question

Greetings! I am in the process of purchasing a Mark I rifle. All the metal components for a Mark I is there but the indentation for the stock is missing adjacent to the ejection port. The stock has been on the rifle for a long time and does not have re-built marks. As appropriate it has a JFC cartouche being made at SA. But the stock also has an ELJ stamp next to it. My references state this is an RIA inspector. Were stocks transferred to SA from RIA? The barrel date is 12-19. Could the stock be proper? Your thoughts please. Thanks! H.T. Katy, Texas

If it doesn’t have the scallop for the ejection port it is not a Mark 1 stock.

My thoughts precisely. Thought I would bounce it off of those with greater knowledge than myself. The price of the rifle was negotiated downward appropriately due to this fact. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Best regards, H.T.

From the picture, the Mark-I does not have the cut-off or spindle for the adaptation of the Pedersen device either. I very much doubt that it would have the correct Mark-I trigger and sear. It looks like a typical rebuild from the mid to late 1930s as stockpiles were being replenished for the perceived need leading up to WWII.

Don't have it in my hands to respond definitely, but I did go over the parts with the gentleman. He went to the CMP website where there is an article on the different components and we had a detailed discussion. Based on that, it appears to be all Mark I except for the stock. If you look closely at the spindle in the photograph, you can make out the screw slot indicating the correct part. After receipt, I shall report back if it is not as presented. Regards, H.T.
