When you slide the receiver/trigger/barrel assembly back into the recoil plate, should there be a slight resistance when sandwiching the barrel into the stock? In other words, mine does not just drop in, I need to squeeze together barrel and stock and then slide on the band. Its all less then an 3/4" of travel.
3/4" is too much. About 1/8" is right. The barrel should not lay flat in the channel or too high, and you should only have to gently push it down about 1/8" to slide the band on. Adjustments to attain this are made with the recoil plate. Loosen the screw some and reinsert the receiver and barrel. Whack the buttstock with your hand until the barrel drops. When it drops to about 1/8" over the stock channel at the nosepiece, you're set. if it drops flat at first, tighten the screw some, and try again. Repeat until it's right.Quote:

When the action settles into place, it'll make a different sound. At this point the barrel should be hanging at the exact position for assembly, just barely above the barrel channel. It would be better to have the barrel hit the channel and then be lifted and held in place by the barrel clamp in the band then to have to force the barrel down in order to assemble the stock. You never want to force the barrel down so the band will assemble to the stock.
The 'cowboy' method is to hang the action, then load and fire the carbine until the action settles, then complete assembly. LOL

What about the stock with long term water damage under the recoil plate?
Wood softened and compressed?
Never happens?
Shim or bed? Your most expert thoughts?
They have excellent instructions on the CMP carbine forum for "Hanging the action" in the stock. I used them, and this is what I got:

I would soak Super Glue into the wood until it turns into rock, then use the bedding compound (with release agent on the plate so it doesn't stick) to set the plate correctly.Quote:
