First of all, what markings does it have on the receiver ring?
think you answered your own question if it is in fact an M1917 , but assuming you really dont know and may only have been told ....
if it has a W - RE - ERA marking its most likely a pattern 1914 in 303 'if' in original form and if it says 'EDDYSTONE" "US rifle model of 1917" then its a 3006 'if' in original form , but these were sported and wildcatted to the limits of their very strong action , so lots needs to be provided to help you - start with decent photos , and careful transcription of markings with the locations ,
You really should post this at the M1917 and Pattern 1913/1914 Rifles sub forum.
Is this rifle in military configuration? is it sporterized? Bubbaed?
M1917 rifles were chambered for the U.S. .30 cal (30-06) cartridge as manufactured.
Post the receiver markings and some pictures for further help, you haven't given enough info to be any more helpful.

"....It is the U.S. Issued version, therefore it is in 30.06 caliber....." that assuming no one sported it and altered the chamber which is not uncommon , these actions were very strong and did get altered
